Microcement, Simply Explained

Microcement is a thin, cement-based decorative coating used to create continuous, mineral surfaces.

Rather than being cast as a thick, solid material like traditional concrete, microcement is applied in refined layers over a stable underlying surface. This allows it to create the visual depth, subtle movement and tactile quality associated with cement and stone without requiring the entire object to be made from solid concrete.

What Is Microcement Made From?

How Thick Is Microcement?

A complete microcement system is typically only a few millimetres thick. Unlike conventional concrete, it does not need to form the entire structure underneath it.

Is Microcement the Same as Concrete?

Why Does Microcement Have So Much Variation?

These variations are not something we try to completely eliminate. They are part of what gives a handcrafted mineral finish its individual character.

How Is Microcement Furniture Protected?

The microcement itself is only one part of the finished furniture surface.

Once the desired texture and appearance have been created, the surface is protected with a compatible sealer.

• Protect the mineral surface underneath

• Soft and matte rather than glossy
• Subtly textured rather than perfectly uniform
• Mineral in appearance rather than painted or printed

Up close, the surface still retains enough movement to make the material feel individual.

Can Microcement Be Different Colours?

Yes. Microcement is not limited to traditional concrete grey.

Mineral pigments can be used to create a wide variety of tones, including:

• Warm whites
• Sand and beige tones
• Soft greys
• Earth-inspired neutrals
• Charcoal and deeper shades

Neutral colours work particularly well with microcement because the subtle variation within the surface gives simple colours added depth.

Is Every Microcement Piece Identical?

No, and that is intentional.

Because microcement is applied and finished by hand, two pieces in the same colour and design may still have small differences in:

• Tone
• Texture
• Trowel movement
• Surface variation

They should belong to the same visual family, but they should not be expected to look like machine-printed replicas of one another.

That individuality is part of the character of the material.

Is Microcement Furniture Durable?

Yes, when the entire system is properly designed and finished.

Durability depends on more than the visible microcement layer. Several parts of the construction work together:

• A stable underlying furniture structure
• Proper surface preparation
• Correct microcement application
• Appropriate sanding and finishing
• A protective sealer

How Do You Care for Microcement Furniture?

Everyday care is relatively simple.

• Use a mild, pH-neutral cleaner when necessary

• Avoid unnecessarily harsh chemical cleaners

Is Microcement Waterproof?

Microcement systems can achieve very good resistance to moisture when correctly applied and protected with the appropriate sealing system.

For furniture, however, we prefer to think of the finished surface as protected and moisture-resistant rather than something that should be exposed to standing water indefinitely.

Spills should still be wiped up rather than left sitting unnecessarily.

Can Microcement Scratch or Chip?

Like most premium furniture finishes, microcement can be damaged by excessive force or abrasion.

For example:

• Rough objects dragged across the surface may cause marks
• Strong impacts can potentially damage edges
• Abrasive cleaning products can affect the protective finish
• Very hot objects should not be placed directly on the surface

Normal everyday use is very different from deliberate scratching, heavy impact or extreme heat.

Simple surface protection goes a long way.
